This will be my attempt at sharing my travel stories with all of you while I am studying abroad at the University of Kent in Canterbury, UK, as well as any other places I visit while I'm over there. Enjoy!

Woops…

Just realized how long it’s been since I posted something on here. I’ve been in England for about 4 weeks. Really, I haven’t been doing anything I would consider overly exciting. I mean, I did see a play in London, but not much else. I have definitely been slack about taking pictures. I plan to correct this issue soon. I’m going to Whitstable on Saturday, which is close to Canterbury, and is on the coast. I will also plan on getting tons of pictures for my 21st birthday celebration(s). The plan so far is to go to London the weekend after my birthday (my birthday is on a Tuesday, and I have two papers due that week. Because University of Kent hates me).

Also, if anyone wants a postcard, send me your mailing info (via facebook, email, etc.). I’m going to try and start sending some postcards soon-ish.

I miss everyone so much!

Ugh… first class today was a 2-hour seminar. My seminar professor is funny, but kinda… not rude, but something similar… like a younger, not as cool Mr. Dowd for English…

I have so much to read just for his seminar just to catch up. I felt so stupid. Plus, they do degree programs, etc. differently, including prep-classes… I’m a worry-wart as it is, and today made it worse… Idk

January 17

Still pretty normal here… Today was the first day of classes, but I only have classes on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, so I got to sleep in. Which was nice because I couldn’t get to sleep until about 5am here.

Went out with two of my flat mates and some people from Park Wood (Woody’s) to the city on Saturday night. The group on the way was myself, another American, a Russian-American, a Hungarian, a Canadian, and two Danes. Very funny. Got to touch the Cathedral, was stared at by the security gaurd, and then walked away cautiously lol

Experienced pubs. British bathrooms are fascinating, because no two have been alike. They are the snow flakes of British culture. Not really, but I think it’s weird.

While we have Beezers at USC, the Brits (or at least, Canterburians) have kebab shops for late night foodage. We met up with some British guys who also live in Woody’s, and we all trekked back to Woody’s. The group gradually diminished, and it ended up being 5 of us (2 Brits, a Hungarian, a Dane, and myself) sitting around a kitchen table talking about films and television. Good night, but way later than I’m used to.

I got a late start yesterday (obviously). I had a nice, quiet Sunday in my room, watching some more Conan, Daily Show, and Colbert. Sunday Trivia at my dorm doesn’t start until next week, but I did go to Origins, which is our in-house restaurant and pub, for dinner anyways.

Today was another late start, but hopefully I’ll get better at sleeping on time and such. I have my first class tomorrow, a seminar, after lunch. I’m very nervous, but excited.

I went to the mini-mart again today, for some more specific things. They don’t have zip-lock bags that I can see. They have freezer bags with two handles that you tie. So that’s fun. I will finally cook something tonight, I think. On my way back to Darwin, I was asked about the fastest way to get to town from campus (walking or bus), and where the bus stop was. By a British person. She was just visiting campus for a meeting, but I felt very special for a brief moment. This sort of thing happens to me a lot back home. I can be doing something very involved or have headphones in (like today), and someone will still pick me out of a crowd and ask for directions, and usually to a place I’m still unfamiliar with. I got a bit of a giggle out of the whole thing, but I think I was somewhat useful. I ended with, “Once you get to that point, find another person and double check for the rest of the way.” The woman agreed and happily thanked me.

The rest of the time today, I have been/will be reading King Lear some more for my seminar tomorrow. I am mostly anxious because I have no idea what to expect as far as standards for work, etc. Plus, I have a million books to read each week for each class, according to their course outlines. Lovely.

January 15

Couldn’t sleep well last night. Apparently they turn the heat of at night, so I kept waking up because I was too cold. Didn’t get up until noon.

ate an apple and some instant coffee… threw it up. My food consumption here has been really off, and I’m trying to get better… Am currently enjoying an egg and bacon sandwich from the on-campus mini mart, and it’s good so far… and I bought more grocery stuff to make my meals with, so hopefully things will go more smoothly, food-wise… Grocery shopping here is quite an experience in and of itself…

I walked from my dorm all the way to town today… didn’t see everything because I was a little lost/freaked out/sore in my feet. It was nice, and a tiny bit of sun came out from the clouds for a few minutes, so I think it was worth it.

I met some more people that live in my block. Apparently my co-ed living situation is normal, because there are 2 girls and 3 guys in the flat below me. And the guy I live with that I thought was British is actually Hungarian. His name is Lottie (sp?). So far, I know that the two Brit girls downstairs do observe tea time.

I’m still really nervous to be here… I know, it’s only been 3ish days, but I’m alway a major worry-wart, so there ya go…

Will try cooking a real meal later tonight, if only to see if I can draw out more people from my block and force them to meet me lol. If not, I can at least experiment with the kitchen stuff alone and unobserved.

I didn’t take pictures on my walk today because the wind was about 26mph and outrageous… however, i do have some of my flat/building, so I’ll post those soon.

Finally have internet!!!!!

It’s been so long, I don’t know where to start…

I’m tired. Oh, am I…. I slept for about 12 hours last night and I’m still feeling it… btw, it’s 6ish pm here… so that’s still weird…

Flight to London was delayed for about 3 hours because of a technical difficulty, aka, Aubbie shouldn’t try flying anymore…

arrived in London, shared a car with a dude from North Carolina who’s also studying abroad here… and it turns out he’s one of my flat mates…

arrive on campus late because of flight delay, so I missed the first part of orientation… move my junk to my room, then get my id and go to the international student meeting…. then a power nap and free dinner with the international students… I sat with Tremaine (my flat mate) and students from China, Japan, and Pakistan, so that was interesting… especially when they joined in the Scottish folk dancing (I did not partake because I have selective dignity).

so far, I have three male flat mates. I haven’t met the 5th one yet, but chances are it’s a dude too… stupid name…

went to bed early last night because of not sleeping on the plane and being tired from traveling…

had a buffet thingy today with other international students, then shopping at ASDA in town, which is their Wal-Mart…

and now my internet finally works, so time to make people talk to me!!! and finish unpacking…

more later!
